MISSISSIPPI HIGHLIGHTS THE ESSENTIAL ROLE OF TRAVEL THIS NATIONAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK

This week, May 19-25, the tourism industry celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW). Established in 1983, NTTW is the annual celebration of the significant contributions of the U.S. travel industry. This year, industry professionals will spotlight the essential role that travel plays in powering our nation’s economy and connecting the country.

In Mississippi, the travel industry generates $744 million in state and local taxes, providing $663 in tax relief for every Mississippi household. In 2023, visitors spent $7.5 billion in our state. Mississippi was also 11th in the country in year-over-year visitor spending growth as a result of strategic investments in tourism recovery by state leaders.

“As Mississippi’s fourth-largest industry, the tourism industry supports over 100,000 jobs and helps cultivate vibrant communities that attract more visitors to our beautiful state. Additionally, tourism growth significantly enhances the quality of life for our residents and fosters new development,” said Mississippi Tourism Association Executive Director Danielle Morgan. “This National Travel and Tourism Week, we celebrate that travel is essential, not only to our economy but also to enriching our lives through the power of connection.”

“Travel in the United States is a $2.8 trillion industry that supports nearly 15 million American jobs while fueling other important industries like manufacturing, health care and agriculture—all of which depend on travel to generate business, spur innovation and support education,” said the U.S. Travel Association. “The travel industry is essential to America’s success—it is an economic powerhouse that unites people, benefits society and is paramount to the United States’ global competitiveness.”

Mississippi is recognizing travel’s essential contributions with celebrations planned in communities across the state in honor of National Travel and Tourism Week.
